Feeling apprehensive about your first comprehensive oral exam? That’s completely normal! At Chiu Dental, we try to make coming to the dentist as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If you’re in search of a friendly, approachable dental office in Kitchener-Waterloo, Chiu Dental may be the dental office you need! We believe that a positive dental experience can lead to better oral care, and that is what we wish for everyone.
Let’s take a moment to run through what that appointment will look like and what to expect.
What Will We Do?
In comprehensive oral exams, we do a few things. One of the first things we will do is talk. We want to build a long-term patient-dentist relationship with you! Tell us about yourself and your lifestyle. These answers will not only help us get to know you better, but they will also aid us in discovering how to improve your oral health.
We’ll discuss your current concerns and do a full exam. This will consist of checking teeth, gums, neck, jaw, head, as well as your throat. We will also review your dietary habits, especially if you are prone to cavities, as this plays a big part in your overall oral health. X-rays are an integral part to a complete examination as it allows us to see things our eyes cannot see when visually examining the oral cavity. Things such as decay between the teeth or under old fillings, or even dental infections can only be seen using x-rays. The frequency of which these are taken depends on each individual’s need and risk of gum disease and cavities. If all is well, all you may need is just a good cleaning to get caught up! If there are issues that need to be addressed, options can be discussed to find what is best for you. If there aren’t any concerns, we might send you a reminder in a couple of months for a check-up. If there are things that need to be addressed, we can talk about options and follow-up appointments.
Is it Uncomfortable?
We do our best to ensure you are comfortable every step of the way. During a comprehensive oral exam, nothing should give you significant or moderate pain. This appointment is meant to assess where you are at and not much more. If you are uncomfortable at any point, please let us know! Your comfort is our priority, and we encourage open communication throughout the process. The well-being of our patients is important to us, and we’re here to address any questions or concerns you may have.
What Should I Bring?
If you have dental benefits, please bring your health insurance card with you. We will directly bill your provider for you. If you have ongoing medical conditions being followed by a doctor, please bring relevant supporting documents, as well as a list of any medications you are taking. Lastly, bring your questions and concerns. If you have aesthetic concerns, we can chat about that, too!
