Getting Ready for Your Tooth Extraction in Kitchener-Waterloo

At the Dentist: X-Rays, Medical History, and Proposed Treatment Plan

Your journey begins with a detailed assessment at our Waterloo clinic. We use dental X-rays to evaluate your tooth’s position, root structure, and proximity to nerves. Once we’ve assessed your tooth, we’ll work with you to build a proposed treatment plan. This will involve discussing pain management options, like a local anesthetic, laughing gas, or oral sedation, and booking your tooth extraction appointment.

We’ll also ask you for some personal health information at this stage. This might include information about underlying health conditions that can impact your oral health, regular medications (like blood thinners) that could affect your treatment, and any past reactions to anesthesia or other dental procedures.

Here at Chiu Dental, your comfort is our priority. If you are anxious about the tooth extraction process, Dr. Chiu and her experienced team of dental assistants will walk you through the process and offer accommodations to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

At Home: Pre-Appointment Preparation

Once we’ve settled on a treatment plan, it’s time to prepare for your dental extraction appointment. Your dentist will give you specialized pre-extraction instructions, which might include:

  • Fasting for 6-8 hours before your appointment.
  • Arranging a ride home post-procedure.
  • Taking a painkiller before your appointment.

Once it is time for your appointment, we’ll discuss the procedure with you one last time before administering the anesthetic and proceeding with the extraction. And here’s the important part: tooth extractions shouldn’t hurt. If you are experiencing pain while your tooth is being removed, tell your dentist and they can adjust your freezing to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible.

After Your Appointment: Post-Extraction Care

Pain Management

As your freezing wears off, you might experience some pain. To help manage discomfort, take Advil or Tylenol every 4-6 hours for 1-2 days after your appointment. Additionally, you can use an external ice pack to manage any swelling.

Avoiding Infection and Dry Socket

The most important thing to do after tooth extraction is to keep the area clean to minimize the risk of infection or dry socket. You can do this by:

  • Using a gentle, warm saltwater rinse.
  • Avoiding smoking or drinking alcohol until the area is healed.
  • Avoiding drinking through a straw.

Pay attention to swelling, fevers, or extreme pain that develop 4-5 days after the procedure. These could be indications of dry socket or an infection. If you suspect you are experiencing either, call our office immediately to discuss the next steps.
