For many seniors in Kitchener-Waterloo, dentures are a practical, effective solution to restore function, comfort, and the ability to smile freely again.

If you’re considering dentures or exploring your tooth replacement options, this guide will help you understand what dentures are, how they compare to alternatives, and why they might be the right choice for your situation. Keep reading to learn more!

What are Dentures?

While most people are familiar with dentures and their function, let’s recap this tried-and-true tooth replacement solution. As you probably know, dentures are removable prosthetics designed to replace missing teeth in both form and function. In other words, they look, feel, and work like natural teeth—helping the patient regain their ability to speak, eat, and smile with ease.

There are two types of dentures:

  • Complete/Full Dentures, which replace an entire row or set of teeth. This is an ideal solution for when most/all natural teeth have been removed from your mouth.
  • Partial Dentures are a hybrid solution designed to replace some missing teeth while you still have natural teeth remaining.

Alternatives to Dentures

In today’s modern dental landscape, several tooth replacement options are available. While dentures are favoured for many reasons, you could also choose:

  • Implants: A prosthetic device which is securely anchored into your jawbone. Unlike dentures, implants are not removable. However, due to the integration process, not all patients are candidates for implants. Read more: “Your Expert Guide to Dental Implants in Waterloo.”
  • Bridges: Using dental crowns and artificial teeth, this solution is also used to replace missing teeth. They are also not removable, but do not require the same integration process as implants. 3 Key Benefits of Dentures

For patients requiring tooth replacement, there are three key benefits to dentures, especially when compared to other options on the market.

  • Cost-Effective Compared to Alternatives: Both implants and dental bridges can be expensive, especially if you don’t have adequate insurance coverage. For seniors looking for a more cost-effective solution, or individuals using the Canadian Dental Care Plan, dentures offer a cost-effective and accessible solution.
  • Replaces Multiple Teeth with One Solution: Instead of addressing each missing tooth individually, dentures solve the entire problem in one treatment. A single pair of complete dentures can replace all upper teeth, all lower teeth, or both–meaning fewer visits to the dentist overall!
  • Suitable for Patients with Gum Disease: Not every person is a candidate for implants, especially those with significant gum disease or bone loss. Dentures are an easy solution, no matter your underlying health conditions.

FAQs

How Much Can I Expect to Pay for a Full Set of Dentures?

The cost of either a full or partial set of dentures can vary significantly. Several factors can influence the overall cost, including the type, material, and any additional dental work required.

The Ontario Dental Association’s Suggested Fee Guide outlines estimated and approximate costs for dental services in Ontario. According to this guide, a full set of dentures could cost between $500 to $2000+, while a partial set could cost between $400-$1500. Chiu Dental follows the ODA’s recommended fee structure.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Typically, dentures last 5-10 years. The total lifespan of your prosthetic depends on proper maintenance, as well as the material used. For example, if you are diligent with cleaning and maintaining your dentures, they will last longer than other lower-quality and poorly maintained options.

Does Insurance Cover Dentures?

Yes, most insurance plans offer partial coverage for dentures, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan. However, the total amount covered will depend on your level of coverage and insurance plan. We are happy to guide you through the process of submitting to insurance. We can also provide detailed estimates of total treatment costs so there are no surprises.
